Glenn Monohan – Upper Missouri River Guides Founder, Geologist, Advisor & Role Model
Glenn worked for sixteen years as a high school science teacher, and for 8 years taught a college class, “Montana’s Historic Missouri River”. He is a member of several conservation organizations including Montana Wildlife Association, Western Watersheds Project, Buffalo Field Campaign, Sierra Club, and Natural Resources Defense Council. He holds a Geology degree from Montana State University.
Glenn considers the Upper Missouri to be a national treasure, and has been heavily involved in conservation efforts to improve the management of the river for recreational users, and to resist pressure from extractive industries (specifically oil/gas, and livestock) to gain a stronger foothold in our National Monument. Shortly after the Upper Missouri received national monument designation in 2001, he was a founding board member of the Friends of the Missouri Breaks Monument.
Glenn makes it a point to join at least one trip a season. Glenn enjoys retirement by filling his time land sailing, ice boating, hiking in the wilderness, road biking, maintaining an impressive garden and flying a Cessna plane all around Montana to see her treasured from the sky!

Guidebook for Canoeing Montana’s Upper Missouri National Monument and Wild and Scenic River

Co-authored and published by a BLM River Ranger and the founder Upper Missouri River Guides. As the only available Upper Missouri River guidebook, having this resource in your canoe will significantly enhance your experience on the river.

The core of the book is the "History Digest", consisting of a 175 page, mile-by-mile river log of historic events and locations along the Upper Missouri River, keyed to the U.S. Bureau of Land Management maps that are commonly used by floaters. Canoe paddlers can identify their location on the BLM maps, and cross-reference their location with the History Digest to read about the history of that particular location.

The history digest includes over one hundred descriptive narratives which provide interesting information about each of the thirteen Lewis and Clark campsites on the Upper Missouri, as well as on the fur trading fort sites, steamboat landings, Indian habitation sites, and the old homestead buildings that floaters pass on the river.
